Ganghwa Seodo Central Church

Ganghwado Island was the first area in Korea to be influenced by the opening of ports in the late 19th century due to its geographical conditions, leading to active missionary work by Westerners. Among the churches built at that time, three remain on Ganghwado Island today: the Anglican Church of Ganghwa (built in 1900), the Ganghwa Onsuri Anglican Church (built in 1906), and the Seodo Central Church. Seodo Central Church is a hanok (traditional Korean house) chapel that began construction in 1923 with donations from church members and was completed in July of the same year. Its name was changed from Jumun Church to Seodo Central Church in 1978. The interior of the building follows the style of early medieval Western churches but is very simple, consisting only of a narrow nave and side aisle used as a worship space, and a central pulpit. At the front, a lectern is placed above the pulpit, and the floor is laid with wooden planks. This building holds great significance as it was built based on the structural framework of traditional Korean wooden architecture while adopting the form of a Western church. It has been well-preserved in its original state and continues to be used as a religious facility.
