Why travelers stop here
The mantle xenolith distribution site in Jinchon-ri, Baengnyeongdo, Ongjin, is located on the coast about 1.3 km east of Jinchon-ri, Baengnyeong-myeon. Along the coastline, a lava layer containing yellow peridotite lumps with diameters of 5 to 10 cm is formed. The lava layer is over 10 m thick and consists of black basalt. The mantle xenolith distribution site in Jinchon-ri, Baengnyeongdo, Ongjin, was formed when peridotite created tens of kilometers below the Earth's surface rose together with erupting lava, providing important data for studying the state of the deep underground. In Korea, areas where mantle xenoliths are distributed are limited to Jeon-gok, Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province, the Cheorwon area in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Ulleungdo, and Jejudo.
