Ganghwa Hwamunseok Village

A rural traditional theme village located in Songhae-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon. Designated in 2005, it offers hands-on experiences making traditional Hwamunseok (patterned rush mats) using Ganghwa's rushes, along with various seasonal farming and harvesting activities. Hwamunseok Village has been famous for its Hwamunseok since ancient times. Hwamunseok is a flower-patterned mat woven from rushes. Originating in the Goryeo Dynasty and developing as a cottage industry, about 100 years ago, the Joseon royal court ordered the creation of patterned mats, and a villager named Han Chung-gyo succeeded in producing Hwamunseok with patterns. The village houses the Hwamunseok Museum. It is also the only village where the 7th Gilhak-gun Nongak (traditional Hwanghae Province farmers' music) is preserved.
