Why travelers stop here
Bunbawi, made of white marble, was named by the residents of Socheongdo Island because the rock looks as if it has been whitewashed. It is also called Woltti because when viewed from the night sea under moonlight, a white belt seems to surround Socheongdo Island, and it served as a lighthouse. This Bunbawi is marble formed from limestone, created by the accumulation of dead organisms like corals that thrived in the warm seas of the past, which underwent metamorphism under high temperature and high pressure. In certain parts of Bunbawi, fossils called 'stromatolites' are found. These stromatolites are fossils of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that supplied oxygen through photosynthesis on the primitive Earth. Residents called these stromatolites 'oyster shell stones,' and they are now designated as Natural Monument No. 508, the oldest fossils in South Korea.
