Why travelers stop here
Gwimokbong (1,035.2m) is a mountain spanning across Jeokmok-ri and Sangpan-ri, Buk-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. To the east lies Myeongjisan, to the southeast Yeoninsan, and to the west it connects with Gangssibong and Cheonggyesan along the Hanbuk Jeongmaek mountain range. The name Gwimokbong is said to originate from Gwimokgogae (Gwimok Pass). The pass was named Gwimok because its shape resembles a human ear (gwimok meaning 'ear-shaped'). Alternatively, Gwimok is also written as Guimok (九耳木), referring to a legend about a white fox with nine ears that frequently appeared on the pass and tugged at travelers' bundles. Another theory suggests that the mountain was originally called Gyumokbong (規木峰) due to the abundance of zelkova trees (gyumok), which later changed to Gwimokbong. Yet another story says that the term 'gilmok' (a place where valleys and ridges converge) evolved into 'gwimok' over time.
