경기도 파주시 적성면 자장리

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gamaksan Mountain (675m) spans across Jeokseong-myeon in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, Nammyeon in Yangju-gun, and Jeongok-eup in Yeoncheon-gun. It is a renowned mountain belonging to the Five Great Mountains of Gyeonggi, featuring waterfalls, valleys, and rock walls. From the summit, the Imjin River and Songaksan Mountain in Gaeseong come into view, and the opposite peak, Imkkeokjeongbong, also boasts splendid scenery.

Upon reaching the summit, the mountains and fields of the DMZ area unfold across the river, and on clear days, Gaeseong's Songaksan Mountain and Bukhansan Mountain are visible. At the top, the Gamaksan Monument stands on a stone pedestal, now worn away with no trace of inscriptions. This monument, a local cultural asset of Paju-si, is called the 'Letterless Monument' due to its lack of characters, and is also known by names such as Bitdol Daewang Monument or Seol In-gwi Monument, with various legends passed down orally. The mountain features waterfalls, valleys, and rock walls, and below Janggunbong Peak, there is Imkkeokjeong Cave, where Imkkeokjeong hid to evade government forces. In Seolmari Valley, there are the British Forces War Memorial and the Korean Heroic Corps War Memorial related to the Korean War.
