Kukkiwon opened on November 30, 1972, to inherit and develop the spirit and techniques of Taekwondo, a cultural heritage of the Republic of Korea, promote its spread, and contribute to human peace. The name Kukkiwon is a compound word of 'Kukki' and 'won,' where 'Kukki' refers to Taekwondo as a unique national art, and 'won' means house, signifying the leading house of Taekwondo, also known as the World Taekwondo Headquarters. Kukkiwon plays a pivotal role in solidifying the foundation of Taekwondo as a traditional martial art and global sport, and establishing it as a cultural content. Adjacent to Kukkiwon, the Kukkiwon Museum opened on November 30, 1991. It was established to widely promote Taekwondo by collecting, preserving, and displaying historical artifacts related to Taekwondo, and to globally promote Kukkiwon and Taekwondo as the home country of Taekwondo.
