Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Seoul Waterworks Museum is located in the Ttukseom area, where Korea's first water purification plant, the Ttukdo Water Source No. 1 Purification Plant, was established. On December 9, 1903, American businessmen C.H. Collbran and H.R. Bostwick received a patent from Emperor Gojong for water supply facilities and operations. Subsequently, on August 1905, the Korean Water Works Co., which acquired the patent, began construction in early August 1906 and completed the Ttukdo Water Source No. 1 Purification Plant in August 1908. From September 1, 1908, 12,500㎥ of tap water produced using a slow sand filtration method was supplied to 125,000 residents within the Four Great Gates and the Yongsan area, marking the beginning of Korea's modern water supply history.

Part of the Ttukdo Water Source has been transformed into the Ttukdo Arisu Water Purification Center, equipped with advanced water treatment facilities, which continues to produce and supply tap water 24 hours a day. Another part has been developed into the Seoul Waterworks Museum, serving as a venue for experiential learning. The museum introduces many stories about Seoul's tap water, which has been supplied cleanly and safely from the establishment of the first purification plant in 1908 to the present. It conveys how water supply technology has grown and developed, and operates various experiential learning programs themed around water and the environment.
