Why travelers stop here
Gayasan Mountain is the highest peak in northwestern Chungcheongnam-do, rising between Seosan City and Yesan County. Centered on the summit of Gayasan (678.2m), it branches south to Wonhyobong Peak (604.7m), north to Seokmunbong Peak (656.8m) and then to the Ilraksan Mountain (521.4m)–Sangwangsan Mountain (309.6m) ridge, as well as to Okyangbong Peak (621.2m)–Sujeongbong Peak (453.3m) and Seowonsan Mountain (473.2m). This area features diverse yet easy hiking trails, allowing beginners to climb the mountain with ease. From the summit, the West Sea is visible in the distance, and in spring, various wildflowers such as royal azaleas and rhododendrons bloom profusely, offering beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. To the north, Yonghyeon Valley is home to the Seosan Yonghyeon-ri Rock-carved Triad Buddha and Bowonsa Temple Site, relics from the Baekje period, while the northwestern foothills house Gaesimsa Temple, Ilraksa Temple, and Munsusa Temple. On the opposite eastern valley lie the Namyeon-gun Tomb, site of the Ernst Oppert grave robbery incident, and the Yesan Gayasa Temple Site; this side also serves as the start and end point of the main hiking trail, the fastest route to the summit. Additionally, various cultural properties are scattered throughout, making the mountain itself worthy of being called a vast cultural heritage site. Other attractions include Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest, and nearby sites such as Haemieupseong Fortress, Haemi Martyrdom Holy Ground (Yeosukgol), Deoksan Hot Springs, Gopung Reservoir, Sansu Reservoir, and Okgye Reservoir. To the south, Deoksungsan Mountain, home to Sudeoksa Temple, continues the range.
