Gahoseowon Confucian Academy

This Confucian academy was established to honor Jeong Mun-bu, who served as a righteous army commander during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598). After being enshrined at four shrines in North Hamgyeong Province, a shrine was built at the current location in 1970 through the consensus of Jinju Hyanggyo (Confucian school) members and contributions from descendants. Later, the Jeong Mun-bu General Relics Exhibition Hall was also built within the academy.

Chunguigong Nongpo Jeong Mun-bu (1565–1624) was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. He became a saengwon (lower-level licentiate) in 1585 (the 18th year of King Seonjo's reign) and passed the mungwa (civil service examination) with the highest distinction in 1588, becoming a Hansungbu Chamgun (assistant military officer of the capital). In 1590, he served as a Saganwon Jipyung (inspector) concurrently as Jigyo (royal lecturer) and became a Byeongma Pyeongsa (military inspector) of North Hamgyeong Province, inspecting various garrisons in the northern border region. During the Imjin War in 1592, he organized a righteous army and achieved great victories at the Battle of Jangdeoksan, the Battle of Ssangpo, and the Battle of Baektapgyo, recovering the Gwanbuk (northeastern) region. He was unjustly executed due to involvement in a poetry incident but was later exonerated and posthumously promoted to Jwachanseong (Second State Councilor). The academy includes Gahoseowon, Chungeuisa Shrine, the Relics Exhibition Hall, Bojomyo Shrine, Jangpanggak Pavilion, the Bukgwan Daecheopbi Monument, and the Nongpo Jeong Mun-bu Historic Monument. His literary collection is the "Nongpojip."
