Ganjae Seonsaeng Yuji (Site of Scholar Ganjae Jeon U)

Located in the village of Gyehwado, Buan, Ganjae Seonsaeng Yuji is the place where the late Joseon Dynasty Neo-Confucian scholar Ganjae Jeon U (1841–1922) studied. Jeon U was appointed to a government post in 1882 (the 19th year of King Gojong's reign) but soon resigned to devote himself entirely to scholarship. In 1910 (the 4th year of King Sunjong's reign), when Korea was forcibly annexed by Japan through the Gyeongsul national disgrace, he was outraged and retreated to Gyehwado, which was then an island, to cultivate younger scholars and strive to restore national sovereignty through moral philosophy. Today, a shrine called Gyeyangsa, built in 1933 with a gable roof structure of 3 kan in the front and 2 kan on the sides, honors Jeon U, and a relic museum displaying artifacts related to him stands across from the shrine. On Cheongpungdae by the seaside in front of the site, a monument inscribed with the words "Jungryu Jiju (中流砥柱) Baekse Cheongpung (百世清風)" in the calligraphy of Yun Yong-gu commemorates Jeon U's noble life.
