Why travelers stop here
Galmodo Island is a small inhabited island with an area of 0.17 km² and a coastline of 1.9 km, located about 12 km from Paengmok Port in Jindo. It is a subsidiary island of Jinmodo Island, situated just about 400 meters away. The island is also called [Galmodo] due to the abundant production of arrowroot (gal), and there is a theory that a person with the surname Gal named it [Galmodo] after himself. Additionally, it is said that Jinmodo Island is called [Ganeun Deulmokseom] and this subsidiary island was called [Ganeun Jilmokseom], leading to the name [Galmodo]. However, the island's old name was [Deolmokseom] or [Deolmokdo], derived from the thick bushes, but the name became fixed as Galmodo when the Galmodo Branch School was established.
The dock of Galmodo Island is simple, equipped only with a quay. Looking at the island from the dock where passenger ships arrive and depart, a few houses are visible. The island visible next to the dock is the main island, Jinmodo Island, and the island seen behind is Bukdo, an uninhabited island.
