Gangdaengi Maitreya Buddha

충청남도 서산시 운산면 마애삼존불길 18-1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This Maitreya Buddha was located in the former Gunjang-dong area, now Gopung Reservoir, about 100 meters north of Gangdang Bridge at the entrance to Gangdaengi. The site is elevated, still resembling an island, and overgrown with grass, making it easy to spot. It was moved to its current location due to submersion by the reservoir. Estimated to date from the late Goryeo to early Joseon period, it stands 216 cm tall, with a shoulder width of 65 cm and a thickness of 25 cm. It wears a crown on its head, with the right arm raised to the chest and the left arm bent to rest on the abdomen, similar to other Maitreya statues in the Seosan area. According to legend, it was erected along the route used by Chinese envoys traveling to the West Sea, or it was a guardian statue protecting Bowonsa Temple.
