Gangneung Seobu Market

Seobu Market is a medium-sized shopping mall-type market located in Yonggang-dong, Gangneung-si, established in 1977. In 1982, the old market building was demolished and redeveloped into a complex building where apartments and the market coexist, but the interior facilities were not modernized. Therefore, to revitalize the traditional market, environmental improvement projects were carried out from 2004 to 2005, and in 2020, in connection with the urban regeneration project, various efforts are being made to transform it into a traditional market with many attractions that reflect the unique characteristics of Seobu Market. Seobu Market has a site area of 3,707㎡, with one basement floor and two above-ground floors, and electrical, communication, fire protection, fire extinguishing, gas, mechanical equipment, and construction work have been carried out. Revitalization efforts continue centered on the Seobu Market Prosperity Association. The basement floor houses a computer wholesale market, the first floor has clothing, oil shops, dishes, food stores, etc., and the second floor has various club offices, forming a small-scale local commercial district similar to other markets. The third and fourth floors are apartments where merchants reside. Starting in July 2020, changes began with the CCC (Culture Connect City) project, a public-private partnership between Gangneung-si, Hyundai Motor Company, Public Art Prism, and the Community Chest of Korea. A CCC Lounge has been set up to support various activities, and the [Social Connector Project] has been carried out, where merchants who have long maintained the market and local creators in Gangneung join forces to reinvent existing products according to trends.
