Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
It is said that the name [Gaedo] comes from the Chinese character '蓋' (gae), meaning 'to cover,' as it is believed to encompass the surrounding islands. Another explanation is that Cheonjesan Mountain (320m) and Bonghwasan Mountain (338m) standing tall in the southwest resemble a dog's two ears perked up, hence the name [Gaeseom] (Dog Island).
At the three-way intersection of Hwasan Village, the center of Gaedo, an unusual building catches the eye: the Gaedo Brewery. The makgeolli produced here, known as Gaedo Makgeolli, has been passed down since the Joseon Dynasty, maintaining its legacy for hundreds of years and even expanding to Yeosu.
