Jeong's Old House in Mureung-ri, Geochang

Jeong's Old House in Mureung-ri, Geochang was built by Sanjeong Jeong Hyeong-cho, a descendant of Jeong Eung-du (a judge of Jangyewon) who held the title of Jangsarang. The current building was renovated in 1924. The complex consists of an anchae (main building), sarangchae (men's quarters), and daemunchae (gate building). The inner sarangchae has been demolished, leaving a partially altered structure. The buildings are arranged with a high stylobate on the slope: the anchae is placed on the higher inner part of the site, while the sarangchae is on the lower outer part. The anchae features a rare 'ㄷ-shaped' floor plan in southern Korea, with a three-beam structure and a gambrel roof with single eaves. It has a front of 4 kan and a side of 2 kan, with both end side rooms protruding forward to create the 'ㄷ-shaped' plan. The sarangchae has an ikgong-style three-beam structure with a 'ㄱ-shaped' plan; the front has a hipped-and-gable roof, while the side has a gambrel roof. The protruding daecheong (main hall) is built in a numaru (raised wooden floor) style, with an open lower part and a wooden floor surrounded by a balustrade with lattice railings on the upper part. The sarangchae is named Sanjeongjeong after the owner's pen name, and although slightly modified, it well preserves 18th-century architectural techniques. The gate is a three-kan front gate with a gambrel roof and a raised central gate, with a room and a storage space on each side. The building must be accessed via high stairs, always requiring one to look up from below, fully expressing the authoritative dignity of a noble family. It is currently inhabited, managed, and preserved by descendants.
