Gogosan

Gogosan is a mountain with an elevation of 853m, located on the border of Yeongwol-eup and Sansol-myeon in Yeongwol-gun, and Sindong-eup in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, along the route from Yeongwol to Jeongseon. Currently, it is only used as a hiking trail ascending from Yeonsang-ri, but until about 100 years ago, it was one of the important routes from Yeongwol to Jeongseon. It is situated between Wantaesan and Jeongyangsan, and being a high mountain close to Yeongwol-eup, it is presumed to have been named Gogosan. The Migumaeul village at the foot of Gogosan is widely spread in the mountains, written in Chinese characters as '味邱' or '美九'. '美九' signifies nine beauties: clear blue water, rocky cliffs, vast grasslands, medicinal herbs and wild greens, peacefully playing wild animals, outstanding mountain scenery, blazing red autumn leaves, fish in deep mountain valleys, and winter snowscapes. The rock ridge on the ridge of Gogosan, a miniature version of Yongareum on Seoraksan, consists of stacked rocks like ondol stones, with bonsai-like old pine trees rooted on top. From the summit, looking north, Sinbyeongsan and Neungamdeoksan face each other, and to the right, the Donggang River crossing between Baegunsan and Gombong is visible. Recently, Gogosan is often recognized as one of the mountains passed through while traversing Wantaesan-Neungamdeoksan, but there are also many hikers who use the trail connecting from Gogosan to Wantaesan, or those climbing the Yeongwol-gun mountains from Gogosan via Sinbyeongsan to Neungamdeoksan. Additionally, a typical hiking course starts from Wantaesan, passes through Gogosan and Sinbyeongsan, and descends to Neungamdeoksan. The starting point for hiking Gogosan is the course ascending from Sansol-myeon Yeonha-ri Bokdeokwon-gil, but if you want to walk the old historical path, crossing Migugyo and ascending via Migugil to Miguchi is also a good option.
