Why travelers stop here
Located 500m from Gochang Intercity Bus Terminal, the Gochang Pansori Museum was established on the site of the former home of Dongni Shin Jae-hyo, a theorist, adapter, and patron of pansori, to commemorate him and many master singers such as Jin Chae-seon and Kim So-hee, and to inherit and develop the pansori tradition. Currently, only the sarangchae (men's quarters) of the old house has been restored and is preserved as an Important Folk Material.
Upon entering the lobby of the Gochang Pansori Museum, you see the Meotmadang (courtyard). Around the central courtyard, the exhibition hall is on the right, and the academic research office and stairs leading to the exhibition hall are on the left. The circular exhibition hall [Hall of Fame] displays photo panels of master singers, and the Sorimadang (Sound Yard) is a place to recognize and reconstruct the artistic world of pansori. The Anirimadang (Narration Yard) highlights Dongni Shin Jae-hyo and the singers of Gochang, and the Honmadang (Spirit Yard) offers an experience of pansori through digital videos. Through these exhibition activities, the museum collects, preserves, investigates, researches, exhibits, and interprets tangible and intangible materials of pansori, providing the general public with opportunities for re-education and appreciation of pansori art, faithfully fulfilling its role as a cultural facility.
