Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located by the Yeonguncheon stream in Gokseong-eup, this is a shrine enshrining the portrait of Dangun Wanggeom, the founder of Korea. Built in 1909 by teacher Baekdang Shin Tae-yoon of Gokseong Normal School, who led the March 1st Movement in Gokseong, it was initially a thatched house secretly constructed under Japanese colonial rule. Even during the Japanese occupation, residents gathered here on Gaecheonjeon (National Foundation Day) to hold ceremonies and pray for national independence.

The building has a gable roof with three front bays and two side bays. The brackets are carved with lotus flowers and buds, and the beam ends are ornately decorated with phoenix heads.
