Gwangnamseowon Confucian Academy

경상북도 포항시 남구 구룡포읍 정동길77번길 11-2

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gwangnamseowon originated from Sedeoksa, established in 1791 (the 15th year of King Jeongjo's reign) by local Confucian scholars and descendants to enshrine Hwangbo In (1387–1453), a civil official of the early Joseon Dynasty, along with his sons Hwangbo Seok and Hwangbo Heum. In 1831 (the 31st year of King Sunjo's reign), it was elevated to a royally chartered Confucian academy (saekseowon). However, in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong's reign), it was abolished under Heungseon Daewongun's decree to close seowon, and later restored in 1900.

Hwangbo In served as Jeong-eon of the Saganwon, scholar of the Jiphyeonjeon, Chamui of the Ministry of Punishments, Governor of Gangwon Province, Minister of War, and eventually Yeonguijeong (Chief State Councillor). He supported King Danjong but was falsely accused of treason and killed during the Gyeyu Jeongnan (Coup of 1453). After Danjong's restoration, his name was cleared and he was posthumously granted the title Chungjeong.
