Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gwijeongsa Temple is a Buddhist temple located on Cheonhwang Mountain in Namwon-si. It was founded in 515 (the 15th year of King Muryeong of Baekje) by National Preceptor Hyeonho. Originally named Manhaengsa Temple, it is said that later a king visited and stayed for three days, forgetting to return to the palace, so the temple's name was changed to Gwijeongsa (meaning 'returning to the palace'). The old Gwijeongsa Temple had halls including Beopdang, Jeongnu, Manwoldang, Seungdang, Yeonhwadang, Samgwangjeon, Munsujeon, Myeongwoldang, Siwangjeon, Hyangnojeon, and Yeongdang, along with hermitages such as Namam, Sangam, Daeeunam, and Nageunam. Since 2006, it has become the base for the Indra Net Life Community, a new Mahayana Buddhist movement, leading to reconstruction projects including the renovation of Bogwangjeon, and new constructions of Manhaengdang, Gwaneumjeon, Sansingak, and Jonggak. It also operates the Indra Net Training Center, Manhaengsan Return-to-Farming School, Forest Life Center, and the Social Solidarity Resting Place [Indra Net]. Additionally, Gwijeongsa Temple offers experiential and relaxation-type Templestay programs. Address: 246, Daesang 2-gil, Sandong-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeonbuk State
