Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Geumseongsan is a mountain located in Daebyeong-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, situated directly east of the town center of Daebyeong-myeon, with its parent mountain being Hwangmaesan. The name Geumseong means 'iron fortress' [金城], and it is also called Bonghwasan because a beacon fire station, one of the communication methods from the Goryeo Dynasty, was located at the summit. In some records, the southeastern Heogulsan, the central Geumseongsan, and the northern Akgyeonsan are collectively referred to as Samsan (Three Mountains). The beacon fire station at the summit of Geumseongsan was built by stacking stones around a natural rock formation and creating a fire pit [煙臺] and buildings. Only about 1 meter of the fire pit remains today. There is a site where buildings once stood, and within that site, records related to the construction of the beacon fire station are carved into the natural rock. According to the records, this beacon fire station was built in the 2nd year of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty (1778).
