Geumwonsan

Geumwonsan (1,352.5m) was originally called Geomeunsan (Black Mountain) because it is located west of the old Gohyeon area and appears black. Another legend says the name originates from a golden monkey that lived on this mountain and was captured and imprisoned in a rock called Wonam. Geumwonsan is situated on the ridge of the Baekdudaegan mountain range, which continues from the Namdeogyusan range. Following the ridge that extends southeast leads to Gibaeksan. Geumwonsan features many large and small ponds and pools, including Yunancheong Falls, Jaun Falls, and Hansudong Valley, as well as numerous cultural relics such as a rock-carved Buddha. Near Yunancheong Falls, Geumwonsan Natural Recreation Forest has been developed. The mountain trails are not steep and the paths are gentle, making it a good mountain for family hikes. Geumwonsan Ecological Arboretum, located in the highest area of Korea, was established for the collection, preservation, research, and exhibition of rare plants (over 1,500 species). It includes various themed gardens such as a rhododendron garden, rock garden, Korean fir conservation garden, and hydrangea garden, along with a forest experience education center and visitor center. There is also a deck road for comfortably observing the natural scenery. Geumwonsan Natural Recreation Forest offers accommodation facilities such as forest houses, a forest culture and recreation center, and a forest training center, as well as a campground, outdoor rest areas, a performance hall, observation decks, shelters, and other convenience facilities including restrooms and showers. It provides various forest culture and recreation services such as forest interpretation programs, forest concerts, and an ice festival.
