Gilanjang / Cheonjijang (5th, 10th)

In Cheonji-ri, Gilan-myeon, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the market is held on the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, and 30th of each month. Major items for sale include various agricultural products such as apples and peppers, as well as daily necessities. In the past, it was a sizable market, but due to the opening of the distribution industry and a sharp decline in the rural population, it has gradually declined. Even now, it continues to operate as a five-day market following old traditions, but its scale is minimal. However, it still retains the appearance of a rural marketplace, stopping outsiders in their tracks with its warm-heartedness and local culture. In the 1830s, there were several five-day markets in the Andong area. Specifically, centered around Bunaejang and Sindangjang, there were Pungsanjang on the 2nd and 7th, Yeonghangjang and Sanharijang on the 5th and 10th, Yeaneupnaejang on the 1st and 6th, Ungcheonjang on the 3rd and 9th, and Gumijang, Dodongjang, and Ucheonjang on the 6th and 10th, forming the market sphere of the Andong region. Later, by 1909, Bunaejang, which opened on the 2nd and 7th, flourished into a large market, actively trading agricultural products, cattle, fish, and local specialties such as Andong cloth and Andong soju. In 1963, when Andong-eup was promoted to Andong-si, Bunaejang and Sindangjang transformed into permanent markets. However, after the launch of the integrated Andong-si in 1995, five-day markets such as Pungsanjang, Sinjang, Gudamjang, Jungrijang, Unsanjang, Gilanjang, Songsajang, Woncheonjang, Nokjeonjang, and Seobujang continue to this day in the Andong area. Yet, except for Pungsanjang and Sinjang, their scale remains minimal.
