전북특별자치도 고창군 고수면 사동길 40-160

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Located in a village along the foot of Chukryeong Mountain on the way to Josan Reservoir, this early Joseon lecture hall is situated within Nosansa, the shrine of the Gwangsan Kim clan. Gimgi Seo was a native of Gwangsan, with the courtesy name Sigeon and the pen name Donmokjae. He was the nephew of Maesan Gim Seok-won, who rose to Tongjeong Daebu as a Seonggyungwan Jikgang. Known for his deep filial piety, in 1508 he was appointed as Gwangneung Chambong by King Jungjong and received encouragement. Later, he studied under Jo Gwang-jo and debated with his brother-in-law Yang Paeng-son and others. In 1519 (the 14th year of King Jungjong's reign), he became implicated in the Gimyo Literati Purge, and when Jo Gwang-jo and many new scholar-officials were purged, he retreated to Sangpyeong-ri and shut himself off from the world. Deeply devoted to Jo Gwang-jo's scholarship, he established Gimgi Seo Ganghakdang to focus on educating future generations.

Originally, this site housed a Buddhist hall of Jeonbulsa Temple. The building is estimated to have been constructed in 1548 (the 3rd year of King Myeongjong's reign). It is a single-story, eight-ridged tiled-roof structure with 5 kan at the front and 2 kan on the sides. The interior consists of a 2-kan central wooden-floored hall with a pillow-like floor, a 2-kan left side room, and a 1-kan right side room, reflecting the simple public architecture of the early Joseon period. It is managed by the Gwangsan Kim clan.
