Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Kim Hee-su Art Center is a multi-cultural space built by the Surim Cultural Foundation to honor the educational and cultural spirit of the late founder, Donggyo Kim Hee-su (1924–2012), and opened on May 24, 2016. The former Korea Film Council building was reconstructed into an artistic and modern space that preserves its symbolic significance, blending beautifully with the natural surroundings of Hongneung. The three-story interior includes the Founder's Memorial Hall, a performance hall, galleries, lecture rooms and workspaces, practice rooms, a reference room, a storage vault, a rooftop garden, and a cafeteria. It serves as a cultural space where many people can enjoy culture and arts through exhibitions and performances, and as a platform for artistic creators to grow. Donggyo Kim Hee-su was a Korean-Japanese businessman who served as chairman of the board of Chung-Ang University for over 20 years. He established the Surim Cultural Foundation in 2009 under the banner of Humanity, Future, Culture, and Creation to make South Korea the world's leading cultural nation. The Surim Cultural Foundation awards the Surim Cultural Prize and the Surim Literary Prize to support artists' creative endeavors.
