Why travelers stop here
Dongbok Hyanggyo is an educational institution located on a high hill behind Wolsong Village in Hwasun. A hyanggyo was a national educational institution of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, established to enshrine memorial tablets of eminent Confucian scholars, conduct ancestral rites, and provide education and moral guidance to local residents.
It was first established at its current site in 1444 by Ha Gang-ji, the magistrate of Dongbok-hyeon. Later, in 1568, it was relocated to Gyochon Village from its current location. In 1655, a fire broke out in the guesthouse, destroying the royal tablet (symbolizing the king, enshrined in the local guesthouse). As a result, Dongbok-hyeon was abolished, and the hyanggyo was also closed. However, in 1664, when the county was restored, the hyanggyo was re-established. In 1713, the hyanggyo was moved to the south of the county, and in 1756, it was relocated to its present site on the hill behind Wolsong Village.
