Mangyeonggang River

전북특별자치도 익산시 춘포면 천동리

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This river originates in Dongsang-myeon, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, flows along the boundary between Iksan-si and Gimje-si in Jeollabuk-do, and empties into the West Sea. It is the largest river in Jeollabuk-do, flowing southwest through the northern part of the province, with a basin area of 1,527 km², and runs through the outskirts of Iksan-si. The name 'Mangyeong' comes from Mangyeong-hyeon (currently Mangyeong-eup, Gimje-si), which was located downstream of the river during the Joseon Dynasty. It was named because it is the river north of Mangyeong-hyeon, and 'Mangyeong' means 'a million ri,' signifying vast fields.

The Mangyeonggang River serves as a source of drinking water for the citizens of Iksan-si and is also used for irrigation and industrial water. Farming is conducted on the fields formed by the sedimentation of the Mangyeonggang River. A bicycle path has been created along the river, allowing riders to enjoy cycling while facing the expansive river and plains. Heading toward Mangyeong 1-gyeong Mangyeong Nakjo, centered around Samrye, the area is famous for its beautiful scenery, with silver grass creating a spectacular view in autumn.
