Mulgyeseowon Wonjeongbi Stele

경상남도 창녕군 대지면 모산1길 109-36

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Mulgyeseowon Wonjeongbi Stele was erected in the 14th year of King Jeongjo's reign (1790). It records the origins of Mulgyeseowon and the histories of the 19 enshrined figures. In terms of form, it exhibits a stele style commonly seen in the late 18th century. The carvings of paired birds on both sides of the capstone and the two-tiered rafter (yeonmok) carvings on the front and back lower parts of the capstone evoke the roof of a wooden house, giving it a unique feel. The inscription was composed by Yi Bok-won (1719–1792), who served as Uuijeong and Jwauijeong, and the calligraphy was written by Jo Yun-hyeong (1725–1799), renowned at the time for cursive and clerical scripts, further elevating the stele's prestige.
