Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Midang Seo Jeong-ju Poetry Museum is a poetry museum built to commemorate the poet Midang Seo Jeong-ju, completed by remodeling the closed Seonun Elementary School in 2001. It opened in the fall of 2001, the year after his death, with active support from former Gochang County Governor Lee Ho-jong. The opening date, November 3, was chosen to commemorate Midang's participation in the Gwangju Student Independence Movement while he was a student at Jungang High School. Inside the first exhibition hall, a six-story memorial building, the poet's letters, poetry collections, and personal belongings are displayed, with the sixth floor serving as an observatory. The second exhibition hall displays the poet's handwritten manuscripts, research papers on Seo Jeong-ju's poetry, and other personal items. This museum is located near Midang Seo Jeong-ju's birthplace and grave, making it a particularly meaningful space. By repurposing a closed school building, it pursues the architectural aesthetics of 'eco-friendliness' and 'learning.'
