Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

A traditional house in Jecheon, this is a late Joseon-period lecture hall built by the Jinju Kang clan for the education of their children. Descendants of the Kang clan studied here and grew into influential noble families in the Jecheon area. At the entrance of Jecheon Sangpung Village, there is a signboard for Jecheon Bagyakjae and a monument for the Jinju Kang clan. Taking the mountain path to the left from here leads to Bagyakjae. A single-leaf gate stands at the front, surrounded by a rough stone wall. It is a hip-and-gable roof house with three front bays and two side bays, and a small pond with an island in the center is created in front. The central area has a wooden-floored hall, with two rooms on the left, one room on the right, and a wooden veranda. The hanging plaque is in the handwriting of Yu In-seok, a late Joseon scholar. In 1907, Gang Sun-jo, Park Jeong-su, and Yi Hwa-jung compiled the <Ungang Changui Ilrok>, a battle record of the Hoseo righteous army commander Yi Gang-nyeon, here. Although the building has a long history, it has been managed by the Jinju Kang clan, so its preservation condition was relatively good. Gang Yu, who submitted a memorial opposing peace during the Jeongmyo Invasion, also studied here.
