Boseong-gun Baekmin Museum of Art

전남광주통합특별시 보성군 문덕면 죽산길 168-14

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

As the first county-run art museum in Korea, it was established with donations of works and collections (domestic and international works) by local artist Baekmin Jo Gyu-il, along with his personal assets, and supported by national, provincial, and county funds. It opened on December 29, 1993, after renovating a closed school on the right side of the road to Daewonsa Temple. On the first floor, there is the Baekmin Hall and the International Hall, which houses works by Chinese, Japanese, and French artists, including icons from the Imperial Russian period. The second-floor Domestic Hall is a gallery that uses full natural lighting, rare in Korea, where you can view works by O Ji-ho, O Seung-u, Heo Baek-ryeon, Son Jae-hyeong, and others, as well as a folding screen with calligraphy by Baekbeom Kim Gu, who briefly stayed in Boseong during the Japanese colonial period. The natural lighting method blocks harmful rays and allows only bright light to pass through, a technique also adopted by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
