Statue of General John B. Coulter

This is a statue of General John B. Coulter, located opposite the statue of General Eulji Mundeok at the rear entrance of Seoul Children's Grand Park. In recognition of his contributions to the reconstruction of Korea, which was devastated after the Korean War, the statue was erected in Itaewon in October 1959. It was later relocated to Seoul Children's Grand Park in 1977. During the Korean War, in the critical Battle of Pohang, General John B. Coulter (1891–1983), who was the deputy commander of the U.S. Eighth Army, took command of the I Corps in 1950 at the outbreak of the war, operating as part of the Eighth Army, and played a major role in halting the North Korean advance. In September, he led support units for a counteroffensive against North Korea. After retiring from 1952 to 1958, he served as the head of the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), overseeing the expenditure of over $200 million for Korea's reconstruction.
