Garumaemae Village

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Garumaemae Village is located in Jipyeong-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, an area historically known as the 'Land of Righteousness.' During the late Joseon Dynasty, in the year Eulmi (1895), it was the first place in the nation to raise a righteous army against Japanese aggression, sparking a nationwide movement. The village is scattered across four valleys along the ridges of Chilbosan Mountain, forming hamlets called Sotgogae Village, Buil Village, Sail Village, and Garumaemae Village. Chilbosan Mountain, now with a closed mine, once produced silver, copper, tin, and other minerals, and its name derives from the seven types of gems found there. The name 'Garume' originally came from the village's layout along the mountain ridge, resembling the beams and rafters of a house. However, due to the scattered hamlets and the character 'me' in 'Garume' meaning 'to grind,' which was thought to harm unity, the name was changed to use the character 'mae' meaning 'plum blossom' when starting the experience village. It was renamed Garumaemae Village to symbolize the hamlets coming together like a part in the hair, promoting unity.
