Waegogae

서울특별시 용산구 한강대로40길 46 (용산동5가)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Waegogae is a name derived from the presence of Waseo (a government office that fired tiles and bricks). It is said that the bricks used to build Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul and Yak-hyeon Cathedral in Jungnim-dong were supplied from here. This place is a historic Catholic holy site where saints martyred at Saenamteo and Seosomun during the Byeongin Persecution of 1866 were buried. Additionally, Waegogae Holy Site is where the body of Father Kim Dae-geon (Andrea Kim), the first Korean priest martyred during the Byeongo Persecution on September 16, 1846, was enshrined before being moved to another location.
