Incheon Gyeongseo-dong Green Celadon Kiln Site

This is a Goryeo kiln site from the 10th to 11th centuries, consisting of 5 to 6 kilns that produced celadon in the Incheon Geomam-dong area. The terrain around the kiln site forms a gentle slope leading to the sea. Currently, a protective pavilion has been built to preserve the remaining parts of the kiln revealed during excavation, but the rest of the area has been converted into a golf course. During the excavation, one kiln was investigated, and many green celadon fragments and kiln tools were discovered. The kiln utilized the natural slope and is a single-chamber kiln without compartments. It was rebuilt three times, with sand laid on the kiln floor at a slope of about 20 degrees, and inclined flat ceramic supports placed on top to fire the vessels. The items fired in this kiln are deep green celadon with uneven surfaces in green-blue or green-brown glaze, mostly without patterns, though occasionally wrinkle patterns appear on the bodies of bottles. The pottery forms include many bowls, plates, and bottles. Such green celadon kiln sites have also been found in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do. Previously, green celadon was considered to have developed from earthenware before the emergence of celadon, but it is now viewed as having been mass-produced for local demand under the influence of early celadon. The Geomam-dong kiln site is estimated to date from the late 9th century to the mid-10th century.
