Why travelers stop here
The Okjukdong Coastal Sand Dune of Daecheongdo Island is a representative tourist attraction of Daecheongdo Island, also known by the nickname 'Okjukdong Sand Desert.' Behind the beach of Okjukdong in the northern part of the island, a vast sand dune stretching approximately 1.6km in length and 600m in width unfolds, formed by sand from the sea being carried and accumulated by winds blowing from the sea to the land. This place exudes an exotic atmosphere, as if one has crash-landed in a Middle Eastern desert. Sitting on the sand dune that seems to touch the sky and watching the sand draw different patterns with each breeze, the nickname 'Korea's Sahara Desert' feels truly apt. The sand desert features camel sculptures and sculptures themed around Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's novel 'The Little Prince,' making it a popular photo spot with the desert as a backdrop. Since ancient times, Daecheongdo Island has been known as an island with strong sand winds, to the extent that a proverb says, 'You must eat three mal of Okjukdong sand to get married.' In the past, the dune was as vast as 60 soccer fields combined, but as residents planted pine trees along the coast to create windbreak forests to alleviate the inconvenience caused by sand winds, the size of the dune has been gradually decreasing. Although the challenge of coexistence between nature and humans remains, the Okjukdong Coastal Sand Dune is still an active dune that changes shape with the seasons, offering unique scenery and experiences to tourists visiting Daecheongdo Island.
