Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Named after the area known for carp, Hwang-eo Market was a five-day market that served as a representative market in Incheon since the Joseon Dynasty, trading not only general goods and grains but also reaching a daily cattle trading volume of 500 to 600 head. Moreover, this site became the largest-scale independence demonstration in the Incheon region during the March 1st Movement, when hundreds of people used market day to stage a protest. It developed into the largest movement in the Gangseo area, and the memorial hall was established with the purpose of widely informing Incheon citizens and the nation of this history, reaffirming the historical significance of Gyeyang-gu and inspiring pride. In May 2005, it was designated as a patriotic facility by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, and it features a plaza and a memorial tower. The memorial hall consists of three floors: the first floor houses the Hwang-eo Market 3.1 Independence Movement Exhibition Hall, the second floor a large auditorium, and the third floor offices and club rooms. Exhibits include court rulings, a map of the independence movement locations, a model of the 3.1 Independence Movement, and prisoner cards.
