Incheon Citizens' House

인천광역시 제물포구 신포로39번길 74 (송학동1가)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The former mayor's residence in Songhak-dong, Incheon, was originally a villa built by a Japanese businessman in the 1900s. This house features a blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles along with a typical Japanese garden. The Incheon Metropolitan Government purchased the property and completed its renovation in 1966, using it as the mayor's residence until 2001. After the city hall relocated and the mayor vacated the residence, it was transformed into the Incheon History Archive. Following renovations completed in July 2021, it was reborn as the Incheon Citizens' House. Currently, it serves as a complex historical and cultural space offering various content for the citizens of Incheon. The Incheon Citizens' House is largely divided into three spaces: the former residence building, now called '1883 Modern House'; the front yard and garden, named 'Jemulpo Garden'; and the guard building, repurposed as the 'History Observatory'. Traces of the Japanese-style house and its time as the mayor's residence remain throughout.
