Gamami Beach

Located 24 km west of Yeonggwang-eup, this beach opened in 1925. It features a crescent-shaped white sand beach 1 km long and 200 m wide, with a dense pine forest of about 2,000 trees stretching along the coast, creating a cozy atmosphere. The water depth is only 1–2 m and the water is clean, making it one of the three major beaches in Honam. The name Gamami is said to come from the shape of the Geumjeongsan Mountain behind, which resembles the tail of a horse wearing a yoke (駕馬尾). The natural monument Yellow-billed Egret and Black-tailed Gull inhabit the area. In front of the beach, numerous islands dot the sea, and the sight of fishing boats leisurely sailing on the sea is peaceful. The sunset over the West Sea here, which dyes the Chilsan Sea red, offers a different charm from the East Sea sunrise. Near the beach are the Baeksu Coastal Tourist Road, famous for its outstanding coastal scenery; Dombaeseom Island, known as a sea fishing spot; and Chilsando Island, where seven islands of similar size and shape float in a line on the horizon. It is also good to climb Geumjeongsan Mountain behind the beach at dusk to view the sunset disappearing into the sea.
