Why travelers stop here
Yonghyeon Market was naturally formed in the 1960s as people gathered around Subongsan Mountain. At that time, shops began to appear around the Hanil Theater, gradually developing the commercial district. From the early days of the market's formation, it thrived with about 1,000 stores in operation. During the period when the Suin Line train was running, it enjoyed such prosperity that people from Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, and even distant areas of the Seoul metropolitan area visited. Although its scale has somewhat decreased now, it has been selected as the most revitalized traditional market in a survey by the Korea Consumer Agency, showing its ability to quickly adapt to the changing times. After the traditional market modernization project in 2005, which installed arcades and completed floor, electrical, and restroom renovations, Yonghyeon Market currently operates about 400 stores, offering a variety of items including groceries, seafood, livestock products, fruits, side dish shops, clothing, and miscellaneous goods. The merchant association has implemented management innovation projects, and in 2007, it became the first in the nation to hold a monthly regular market sale. Additionally, it has introduced a public coupon system and opened a Music Box within the market, leading a new shopping culture. The Music Box, which broadcasts music and stories based on song requests from merchants and customers, is another joy of visiting Yonghyeon Market. Next to the Music Box, there is a cozy Masil Cafe where anyone can relax and take a break.
