Why travelers stop here
Ganghwa ginseng began cultivation during the reign of King Gojong of Goryeo (around 1232) and was designated as a special zone in the 1920s. During the Korean War (6.25 War), ginseng farmers from Gaeseong fled and searched for suitable ginseng cultivation sites, eventually finding Ganghwa Island, where soil and climate conditions were optimal for ginseng farming. This marked the beginning of Ganghwa's six-year-root ginseng. Surrounded by the sea on all sides, the area benefits from a natural climate influenced by sea breezes, along with silt loam and clay loam soils, meeting the three essential conditions for ginseng cultivation. The ginseng produced here has no internal cavities or white spots, resulting in firm flesh, and the region yields six-year roots with a high proportion of Cheonji-sam grade red ginseng raw material. The Ganghwa Ginseng Agricultural Cooperative takes responsibility from production to processing and distribution of high-quality ginseng grown in this historically rich and fertile soil, providing safe and reliable food to consumers.
