서울특별시 용산구 양녕로 446 (이촌동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Statue of Sergeant Lee Won-deung, located on Nodeul Island in the Han River, was erected to honor the spirit of Sergeant Lee Won-deung, who demonstrated sacred comradery and self-sacrifice. On February 4, 1966, Sergeant Lee, serving as the jumpmaster for a high-altitude infiltration parachute training exercise with the Airborne Special Forces Group, sacrificed his life when a fellow soldier's parachute malfunctioned. He opened his comrade's parachute but fell into the Han River and died. To forever commemorate his sacred comradery and spirit of sacrifice, the Army formed the Sergeant Lee Won-deung Memorial Committee on February 16, 1966, and erected the statue with heartfelt donations from all soldiers. After years of deterioration, the statue was renovated on June 5, 1998, with the collective will of all Special Forces soldiers. Nodeul Island is a complex cultural space offering many attractions such as Live House, Nodeul Seoga, Nodeul Gallery, Nodeul Lounge, and a multipurpose hall.
