Daepung Sikdang

Daeryong-ri, where the Gyodong-myeon office is located, is the center of Gyodong Island and began to become known to outsiders after being featured on KBS's <1 Night 2 Days>. Gyodong Island was originally an area close to the civilian control line, so it was a underdeveloped neighborhood far from progress and was often introduced as 'an island where time has stopped.' Since the opening of Gyodong Bridge last year, it has become an island visited by tourists every weekend, but Daeryong Market, located in the town center, still retains the nostalgic market atmosphere of the 1970s and 1980s. Daepung Sikdang Alley, said to have a history of over 50 years, the oldest on Gyodong Island, also has a serene atmosphere that takes you back to old memories. Currently run by the daughter-in-law, who has taken over for nearly 30 years, Daepung Sikdang's menu consists of only two items: gukbap (rice soup) and mulnaengmyeon (cold noodles). In winter, they also sell mandu-guk (dumpling soup). The gukbap, boiled with sundae (blood sausage) and pork intestines, is served in a separate bowl format, and you adjust the seasoning with salted shrimp in the lightly seasoned broth. The naengmyeon, which uses only vegetables for the broth, is in the style of Hwanghae Province, the hometown of the mother-in-law, and is a favorite food of displaced people from Gyodong Island who miss their hometown.
