서울특별시 서대문구 봉원사길 120 (봉원동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Bongwonsa Temple, a thousand-year-old traditional temple, was registered as a traditional temple in 2011. In July 2014, the Amitabha Gwaebuldo (large Buddhist painting) and the bronze bell were registered as tangible cultural heritage of Seoul Metropolitan City. Regular Buddhist services are held by faith groups including the Gwaneumhoe, Hwaeomhoe, Choir, and Minhwahoe. Affiliated institutions include the Yeongsanjae Preservation Society, Yeongsanjae Training Institute, the Korean Buddhist Yeongsanjae Preservation Society (corporation), and the Okcheon Beomeum College, a Buddhist chant education institution. Located in the city center, Bongwonsa Temple promotes the traditional Buddhist ritual of Yeongsanjae both domestically and internationally, and through succession and development, it upholds its status as the main sanctuary of traditional Buddhism, striving to be a place for enhancing Buddhist faith in daily life.
