Why travelers stop here
Gabaeryangjin Fortress in Geoje was built in the 21st year of King Seongjong's reign (1490) and served as the main base of Gyeongsang Left Naval Command, which defended the western coast of South Gyeongsang Province during the early Joseon Dynasty. It was one of the seven naval garrisons of Geoje.
This area is strategically very important as it is located on the route to Geoje among the two sea routes that split toward Tongyeong and Geoje with Hansan Island in the center. It was used as the Gyeongsang Left Naval Command and the Three Provinces Naval Command from the 7th year of King Sejong (1425) to the 24th year of King Seonjo (1601), holding great historical significance. Records indicate that during the 16th year of King Seonjo (1593) of the Imjin War, after Admiral Yi Sun-sin became the Naval Commander of the Three Provinces, he established the main camp of the Three Provinces Naval Command on Hansan Island and expanded and renovated this site to a larger scale.
