Dongdosa Temple (Yongin)

Dongdosa Temple is a temple belonging to the Korean Popular Buddhism Bul-ijong (不二宗) and is located in Idong-myeon, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do. The surrounding area is enveloped by various mountains of different heights, including Sinseonbong (308m) to the south, Bonghwang Mountain (256m) to the southeast, and Myobong (228.6m) to the northeast. To the north, it directly faces Idong Reservoir. The mountains harmonize with the reservoir, creating a beautiful landscape. The temple is situated deep and high in the mountains of Yongin, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains including the Idong Reservoir in front. The wide-open view allows visitors to enjoy a sense of openness and refreshment. Dongdosa Temple was founded in 1963 when the old Eobiri Temple site was submerged due to the creation of Idong Reservoir. At that time, a layman named Cha Jang-eop moved the stone pagoda, stone Buddha, and stone lantern from the temple site to their current location. When the Eobiri Temple site was about to be submerged due to the construction of Idong Reservoir, Cha Jang-eop, regretting the submersion of the stone pagoda, stone Buddha, and stone lantern, exerted his willpower and moved all the relics from the old temple site to this Dongdosa Temple. Thus, although Dongdosa Temple is a newly founded temple, it has newly inherited the Buddhist lamp of a temple from the Silla period.
