Why travelers stop here
Gasado Island is the third largest island in Jindo County after Sangjodo and Hajodo. It is the only island in the Jodo-myeon waters excluded from the Dadohae National Marine Park area, and it is a developed agricultural and fishing island with the most seaweed farming in the Jodo-myeon waters. As its name suggests, Gasado Island is rich in Buddhist influences; it is said that the Dae-ri village Dangsan (sacred tree) resembles a Buddhist robe (gasa), hence the name Gasado. Another theory suggests that the island's shape seen from above resembles 'gase' (a dialect word for scissors in Jeolla Province), leading to the name Gaseseom. Gasado is an archipelago consisting of the main island of Gasado and 6 inhabited islands and 10 uninhabited islands. The Gasado Lighthouse located on the way to Deulmok Village and the mountain path leading to the lighthouse are also impressive destinations. In front of Deulmok Village, there is Dolmok Beach, which is 250 meters long. The sunset viewed from the rocks of the breakwater next to Dolmok Beach is beautiful. Gasado also has caves dug by the Japanese during the Japanese colonial period for mining, as well as natural caves. The entire Gasado area was a silica mine, and during the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese military mobilized people from Jindo and Haenam to extract silica minerals. In the artificial cave called Sipja Cave, you can also see the spectacular sight of bats flying around.
