Hwang Hee Historic Site and Ban'gujeong Pavilion

경기도 파주시 문산읍 반구정로85번길 3

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is the historic site of Bangchon Hwang Hee (1369–1452), a renowned prime minister and exemplary clean-handed official of the early Joseon Dynasty. After the fall of Goryeo in 1392, he retreated to Dumundong and later entered government service at the request of the Joseon court. He served in various high-ranking positions from the late Goryeo to early Joseon, contributing to the establishment of institutions and systems. During King Sejong's reign, he served as Yeonguijeong (Chief State Councillor) for 19 years, leaving the greatest legacy of the Sejong era. He passed away at age 90 in the second year of King Munjong (1452) and was buried in Geumseung-ri, Tanhyeon-myeon, with his spirit tablet enshrined in the Jongmyo shrine of King Sejong.

The site includes Hwang Hee's Shrine, built by his descendants in the first year of King Sejo (1455) to honor his achievements, and Ban'gujeong Pavilion, where he spent his retirement. The original shrine was completely destroyed during the Korean War, but descendants restored it in 1962 as a three-bay front, two-bay side building with a choyikgong-style gable roof. Inside, a separate inner chamber houses Hwang Hee's portrait.
