Jajaeam Hermitage

경기도 동두천시 평화로2910번길 406-65 (상봉암동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Jajaeam Hermitage is a historic temple founded by Great Master Wonhyo in the 14th year of Queen Seondeok of Silla (645). A legend tells that Wonhyo met Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva here and received confirmation of his spiritual attainment. In the 25th year of King Gwangjong of Goryeo (974), Great Master Gakgyu rebuilt the temple by royal command. In the 7th year of King Uijong (1153), a fire broke out, and the following year, Seon Master Gakryeong reconstructed the main hall and part of the monks' quarters. Since the temple was completely destroyed during the Korean War and later rebuilt, it no longer retains its ancient splendor. However, because it is located on a rocky mountainside, the temple was built using cliffs and caves, blending harmoniously with the rock face. Walking slowly from the entrance of Soyosan Mountain, you can reach Jajaeam Hermitage. From the start of Wonhyo Cave, you must use the stairs. This cave is said to be where Wonhyo practiced and is called Wonhyo Cave. In front of Wonhyo Cave, there is a small waterfall. Uniquely, a monorail has been installed up to Jajaeam Hermitage for transporting supplies. Along the stairway, there are good writings posted, making the climb enjoyable as you read them. Address: 406-65, Pyeonghwa-ro 2910beon-gil, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do (Sangbongam-dong)
